Ian Shea

  • Ian attended the George Washington University Law School in Washington D.C. Practicing law in the nation’s capital allowed Ian to observe great lawyers at their craft from the D.C. Superior Court to the U.S. Supreme Court. While in school, Ian was active in the student government and earned honors from the University for service work performed. Ian has continued this service work as the President of the Douglas Elbert Bar Association and a member of the 18th Judicial District Access to Justice Committee.

Ian’s current practice consists primarily of family law, including pre-trial, trial, and appellate advocacy. In addition to litigation of financial issues and parenting rights, this practice includes litigation regarding the enforcement of orders, including prosecuting and defending actions for contempt of court and execution proceedings via actions under C.R.C.P. 70 and garnishment actions. This practice has included litigation in the Juvenile Court in paternity, grandparent’s rights, and adoption matters, in the Probate Court in guardianship matters, and in the County Courts concerning protection orders. Ian has helped stepparents adopt stepchildren, including resolving contested relinquishment issues. Ian also advises clients regarding prenuptial agreements, including reviewing agreements presented to drafting agreements appropriate for divorce and estate planning purposes.

Ian’s civil practice includes District Court and County Court cases pertaining to collections, replevin, and breach of Douglas Elbert Bar Association President clients recover property from an engagement ring to an airplane.

Ian is a skilled negotiator and believes that the parties can often resolve disputes better than judges. This belief is informed by the fact that the best way to achieve a client’s settlement result is to be prepared for trial if negotiations break down.

When Ian is not practicing law, he is likely to be traveling locally or internationally. He enjoys playing the guitar and trying new foods.
